Woman jailed for murdering her new born baby found in plastic bag at desk after giving birth at work

A woman has been jailed for up to 20 years for murdering her newborn son who was found in a sealed plastic bag in her desk drawer after she gave birth in her office bathroom .

Kimberly Pappas pleaded guilty to second-degree murder earlier this month following the infant's gruesome death in March.

The 26-year-old agreed to a sentence of from nine to 20 years in prison, which was imposed on Monday, prosecutors said.

"The pain and the grief and regret that I have about this really can't be put into words. It's going to be with me for the rest of my life," Pappas told Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Morrow at the hearing.

Pappas, from Wyandotte, Michigan, had been charged with felony murder, premeditated murder and first-degree child abuse in the death of the boy at a workplace in Redford.

"I just want to say that I am sorry and I wish I had made the right choices that would have stopped all of this," she said.

She allegedly used cuticle scissors to cut the full-term baby boy's umbilical cord inside a business toilet stall in Michigan, according to the Detroit Free Press .

The supply company employee then stuffed him into a sealed plastic bag and hid him inside her desk for about 30 minutes.

Employees called the police after they found a pool of blood in the bathroom.
Fire department responders tried to resuscitate the newborn, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Pappas had told authorities she had a miscarriage, but an autopsy found that the newborn died by asphyxiation and ruled the death a homicide.

Lawyers for Pappas had argued that she needs therapy and counseling and had said in a court hearing in August that she should be charged with manslaughter, local media reported.
